Juniper Hall

Where History Meets Timeless Elegance

Standing proudly in the heart of Paddington, Juniper Hall is one of Sydney’s finest examples of Georgian architecture and a key cultural landmark. Built in 1824 and lovingly restored, this heritage-listed mansion now serves as a distinguished venue for art exhibitions, community events, and cultural programming, blending history with creativity.

A Rich History

Originally constructed by emancipist Robert Cooper, Juniper Hall is one of the oldest surviving colonial buildings in Sydney. Over the centuries, it has served many purposes—from a family estate to an orphanage—and today, it remains a vital piece of local heritage. Its elegant sandstone façade, symmetrical design, and wide verandahs showcase classic Georgian styling.

Art & Exhibitions

Juniper Hall is perhaps best known today for hosting contemporary art exhibitions, photography showcases, and public programs supported by the Moran Arts Foundation. It’s a prominent venue for the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize, which draws artists and visitors from across Australia.

Inside, the house has been thoughtfully curated to retain its historic charm while offering a clean, elegant space for artists to display their work. Natural light floods in through tall windows, and original details like timber floors and fireplaces add warmth to the gallery experience.
